The Journal of Short Film Volume 2 overview / review: I just finally made it through all of the shorts on the (sorta-kinda) recently release JSF Vol. 2, so here are some (very) brief words…
The contents:
1. WE’RE JUST WALKING – Warren Johnston (2004, 8:00) - Nice, “aged” visuals…
2. BLUDREN – Jill Johnston-Price (2003, 7:00) - An animation, but with a stiff style that didn’t really win me over. Color scheme didn’t help, either.
3. BATTLEGROUND MINNESOTA – Gabriel Cheifetz (2004, 8:00) - A bit scattered, but a funky premise.
4. CHUCO – Stephen Stickler (2005, 5:15) - Flashy presentation, but this one didn’t really stand out for me, personally.
5. ANDY – Terence Healy (2004, 5:00) - Funny little story… simple.
6. CAKEWALK – Jeff Economy (2001, 6:00) - I don’t think this one did a whole lot for me…
7. THE TOURIST – James Israel and Jeff Israel (2005, 15:00) - I pictured the ‘conclusion’ before it even happened, but what difference does that make…? Eerie and intense b&w visuals.
8. ONCE UPON A TIME IN BROOKLYN – Neil Ira Needleman (2004, 7:00) - Ha! Very surprised to stumble across this one. I saw it last year during a Rooftop Films screening… Old bickering women will never cease to be funny. I just wish the majority of the dialouge was easier to make out!
9. FINAL LAP – J.J. Adler (2005, 11:50) - The son’s tossing of the cigarette sealed the deal for me.
10. EYESIGHT – Marcy B. Freedman (2004, 3:55) - Awesome concept / story, but the whole slideshow-like presentation left me wanting a bit more.
11. DEMOLITION 7 – Richie Sherman (2005, 9:00) - Stand-out editing and visuals. Nice audio, too.
I really must say (again) that I love the concept behind the Journal of Short Film and wish it was a bit more frequent than a quaterly release.
